Perched high above Whangaroa at the gateway to St Paul’s Rock, the Whangaroa Barn is a ridge-top sanctuary. Whether the harbour below is a glass-calm mirror, a mist-shrouded mystery, or whipped into a frenzy by a passing gale, it's your front-row seat to the Far North’s most dramatic landscape.
The iconic cedar-shingled barn is luxurious for a couple's getaway but can comfortably sleep up to four in the open plan layout.
From dramatic sunsets over the harbour to the blazing Milky Way in the clear night sky, here's your guide to experiences that you'll never forget.

Step through the front door, kick off your shoes, and leave the rest of the world behind — you're on Far North time, now.
From its location to its design, the Barn has a style all of its own. Cool, waxxed concrete underfoot keeps you grounded while skylights and soaring cedar walls draw the light in to the open plan layout and let you experience the beauty and power of the surrounding environment.
Step out onto the back patio, drink in the views, and let your stress drain away.
Climb the stairs to the warm and cozy mezzanine, where your open plan sleeping and living space offers expansive views front and back.
Grab a good book and curl up in the lounge, head outdoors and stretch out on the lawn, or use the Barn as your base to explore New Zealand's Far North — the choice is yours.
And, while you might feel like you're off-grid, a dedicated workspace and high-speed internet (more than fast enough for video calls) lets you stay connected.
A 15 minute (downhill) walk away, you'll spot fish and stingrays in the harbour, while the waters around Whangaroa offer some of the best sport fishing in New Zealand. Every summer, big game fish like marlin are landed, or caught, tagged, and released.
Around the Barn, the locals include shy pheasants, laid back quail, energetic tui, and dancing fantails. At night, the call of the morepork is one of the few sounds to break the silence.
The Barn has a large private patio with a BBQ out back. This opens out to a trellised garden area with a picnic table for a secluded spot to enjoy outdoors dining with a view.
The expansive lawn offers plenty of room to spread out and there's even a paddock below St Paul's Rock for the kids (or dogs) to run around on.
Yep, the Barn allows well-behaved dogs and of course, they need to be with you and under control at all time — the kiwi and other local birds thank you in advance.
