St Paul's Rock is a volcanic plug that towers above Whangaroa Harbour in Northland, New Zealand. The 20-minute climb to the summit rewards you with 360-degree panoramic views of the harbour, the Pacific Ocean, and the surrounding bush-clad ridgelines.
The track is widely considered one of the best short walks in New Zealand and attracts visitors from around the world. For guests staying at the Whangaroa Barn, the trailhead is right at the property boundary — step off the property and onto the track.

The track begins on Old Hospital Road and climbs steadily through native bush. The path is well-maintained but steep in places, so wear sturdy shoes and bring water.
The first section winds uphill through regenerating bush with glimpses of the harbour through the trees. As you get higher, the views open up dramatically.
The final climb to the summit involves a chain handrail bolted into the rock. It's not technical climbing, but it's steep enough that the chain is welcome. Take your time — the rock is volcanic and can be slippery when wet.
At the top, the reward is extraordinary. Whangaroa Harbour stretches out below in every direction, with Ota Point, the harbour entrance, and the open Pacific visible to the east. To the west, bush-covered ridgelines extend into the distance. On clear days, you can see far along the Northland coast.
From the Whangaroa Barn: Walk out the front gate and you're on the track in seconds — it runs alongside the Barn's paddock.
By car: Drive to Old Hospital Road, Whangaroa. There is limited parking near the trailhead. From State Highway 10, take the Whangaroa turn-off at the roundabout 3kms north of Kaeo and follow the signs to the harbour, then up Old Hospital Road. It's the first road after you pass the Sport Fishing Club.
From Kerikeri: Approximately 35 minutes north on State Highway 10.
From Auckland: Approximately 3.5 hours drive north via State Highway 1 and State Highway 10.
If St Paul's Rock has whetted your appetite, Whangaroa has more to explore:
Duke's Nose Track (Kairara Rock): A more adventurous option. The Wairakau Stream Track (3 hours return) features two stream crossings and takes you to Lane Cove Hut, from where the 45-minute intermediate climb to Duke's Nose offers breathtaking views.
Mahinepua Peninsula Track: An easy one-hour ridgetop walk with stunning coastal views and access to sheltered bays.
Old Hospital Road to the harbour: A 15-minute walk from the Barn down to sea level with jaw-dropping views around every corner.
