St Paul's Rock, Whangaroa — one of New Zealand's best short hikes

St Paul's Rock is a volcanic plug that towers above Whangaroa Harbour in Northland, New Zealand. The 20-minute climb to the summit rewards you with 360-degree panoramic views of the harbour, the Pacific Ocean, and the surrounding bush-clad ridgelines.

The track is widely considered one of the best short walks in New Zealand and attracts visitors from around the world. For guests staying at the Whangaroa Barn, the trailhead is right at the property boundary — step off the property and onto the track.

What to expect

The track begins on Old Hospital Road and climbs steadily through native bush. The path is well-maintained but steep in places, so wear sturdy shoes and bring water.

The first section winds uphill through regenerating bush with glimpses of the harbour through the trees. As you get higher, the views open up dramatically.

The final climb to the summit involves a chain handrail bolted into the rock. It's not technical climbing, but it's steep enough that the chain is welcome. Take your time — the rock is volcanic and can be slippery when wet.

At the top, the reward is extraordinary. Whangaroa Harbour stretches out below in every direction, with Ota Point, the harbour entrance, and the open Pacific visible to the east. To the west, bush-covered ridgelines extend into the distance. On clear days, you can see far along the Northland coast.

Tips from the locals

  • High tide is the best time. When the harbour is full, the views from the summit are at their most spectacular — water fills every inlet and the reflections are stunning.
  • Early morning or late afternoon. The light is best, the temperature is cooler for the climb, and you're more likely to have the summit to yourself.
  • Bring a camera. The views in every direction are genuinely breathtaking.
  • Allow 40 minutes return. The climb is quick but you'll want to spend time at the top.
  • Not suitable for very young children due to the steepness and the chain section.
  • Check the weather. The rock can be slippery when wet and the exposed summit is windy in a gale.
